Dr. Janice Keefe of Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) is one of just three health science leaders in the Atlantic region among the 74 newly named 2021 Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS).

She received her BA in Sociology from the University of Prince Edward Island, her MA in Sociology/Anthropology from the University of Guelph, and PhD in Family Relations and Human Development in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Guelph. Prior to coming to Mount Saint Vincent University in 1990, she worked in public municipal home care from 1986 to 1990.

Dr. Keefe is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Studies and Gerontology at MSVU, the Lena Isabel Jodrey Chair in Gerontology, and Director of Nova Scotia Centre on Aging.

According to CAHS, the Election to Fellowship in the Academy is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community. It carries with it a covenant to serve the Academy and the future well-being of the health sciences irrespective of the Fellow’s specific discipline.

Dr. Keefe is one of Canada’s leading researchers on aging, home care, long-term care and caregiving and a resource to municipal, provincial and federal governments on these topics. Her academic output has earned her a Canada Research Chair 2002-12, a named chair in Gerontology at MSVU, and appointments to the CAHS Dementia Assessment Panel in 2019 and the Royal Society of Canada assessment on the impact of COVID on seniors in 2020. She has won awards from the Canadian Association of Gerontology, the Global Ageing Network, and several local organizations.
