During the winter, most of us always want to just stay at home. For some they just want to stay in bed! With our current situation because of the pandemic, it seems like this will become a routine during this season.
If you’re struggling with all of this, it’s understandable. When we feel down, we tend to neglect our basic needs and self-care.
The good news is you don’t need to make a radical change to start feeling better immediately. There are easy ways that you can shake up your routine.
Here are 4 easy ways to move more this winter according to the Doctors Nova Scotia:
Amplify what you’re already doing
If you can’t go to the gym because you are too worried or can’t get that drive going because you don’t have a gym buddy, then your first step is to find ways to move more throughout the day! Add more everyday that suits your lifestyle! Cleaning the house, play with your kids, or have fun with your pets! Every move you make adds up.
Make it fun
Whatever you are already doing, have a mix on it! Add some music and dance-off with your kids! Go for a walk. You will feel better for doing it and it gives you an opportunity to connect with loved ones in a safe way.
Schedule it!
Since many of us work sedentary jobs, spot opportunities to move throughout your workday. For example, set a timer on your phone and move around every 30 minutes. Go to the kitchen and fill your glass of water several times a day. Have a stretch break with colleagues. Try a standing desk, there are tons of affordable options online. For your next virtual meeting, patch in with your phone and go for a walk in your neighbourhood.
Involve others
When you realize you are enjoying, encourage your family to join you and share with them your fun experience! Every year, Recreation Nova Scotia hosts a family friendly winter active challenge called Take the Roof Off Winter. It’s an opportunity to get outdoors, make new memories and have the chance to win some cool prizes.
