Covid-19 has temporarily stopped almost every tradition we know in every culture. That includes the yearly celebration of runners from across Atlantic Canada. For almost 20 years, they begin the summer by participating in the Blue Nose Marathon hosted by Doctors Nova Scotia. But this year, everything is back on track so lace up and join their healthy and fun activities!
Before joining, here are some tips and reminders from Doctors Nova Scotia:
Get the all-clear
If you are only starting to be a runner or a beginner in physical activities, it’s best to consult from your physician to identify potential health issues or existing conditions that could affect your running plan.
Dress appropriately
Come with comfortable clothes, but it won’t hurt if you wear proper running shoes and specialized gears. You can consider wearing a reflective arm band, a jacket with reflective stripes, or even a headlamp when running during early morning or late in the evening.
Be safe
Your safety should be your priority. Choose a clothing that will make you visible even in the dark. Adjust the volume when listening to music, so you can still hear your surroundings. And have your cell phone and some cash for emergency purposes.
Easy does it
Slow and steady pace is better than starting off a sprint. Check your form before increasing your speed. Try alternating running with walking and gradually increase how much time you spend running. You’re more likely to succeed if you take it gradually, rather than trying to run a full 5 km on your first expedition.
Make it a family affair
Encourage your kids to join you! It’s a very healthy way to bond. Kids are more likely to be active if their parents are active.
