Climate change is felt around the world. Icebergs are melting, we are already experiencing higher temperature, and typhoons and hurricanes became more devastating. According to www.canada.ca, human activity is the main cause of climate change. People burn fossil fuels and convert land from forests to agriculture. Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that produces a greenhouse effect. This effect is the reason why the earth is warmer.
Projections indicate that Halifax will experience higher temperatures, more heat waves, more rain and snow and an increasing number of more severe storms, flooding events and wildfires. Extreme weather drives other climate hazards such as sea level rise, decreased snowpack and unpredictable runoff, and increases in invasive species and vector-borne diseases. With these posing threats, everyone should act now!
HalifACT is one of the most ambitious climate action movements in Canada. Halifax Regional Council unanimously adopted HalifACT on June 23, 2020. It is the municipality’s long-term climate action plan to reduce emissions and help communities adapt to a changing climate. It is a transformational plan to achieve a net-zero economy by 2050.
With this commitment to reduce emissions, switching to clean and reliable energy sources, and demonstrating leadership from local government, the 2022/23 municipal capital plan has $10 million in approved spending toward the HalifACT Climate Action Plan for this fiscal year and $109 million approved in principle for fiscal years 2023/24 and 2025/26.
The HRM Regional Council also established a Climate Action Tax that will fund projects in support to this movement. Som of which are electric buses, installing, public electric vehicle chargers, and retrofitting municipal buildings. It will also help improve the Halifax region’s resiliency against the impacts of climate change, from flood mitigation and stormwater management to food security and emergency preparedness.
