In 2007 Admiral launched its Canadian foothold in Halifax with a small group of 20 staff. Now, they employ 500 throughout Nova Scotia who support millions of UK customers with establishing and renewing motor and home insurance policies that provide affordability, flexibility, and peace of mind.

With an-award winning culture predicated on life/work balance, hybrid working, reward and recognition, and internal career growth, Admiral has established itself as one of the Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers, a Best Workplace in Canada and a workplace that’s always striving to do better, together.

Rebecca Cable, Admiral Canada’s Operations Director, shared that the work-life balance was already their priority since 2007. Their UK employees were working until 10 in the evening rendering services to their clients. According to Cable, they needed a location that fit their time zone requirement to ease the load for their UK workforce, and a community that could provide professional, high-end customer service. Thus, Halifax, Nova Scotia was selected. This was decided with the help of Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI). With its expansion, 400 more staffs were hired and supported 5.98 million customers across the UK with home and motor insurance policies.

When the Covid-19 hit, Admiral Canada quickly adapted to the new normal. They allowed their employees to work remotely in their homes and began receiving calls. They were nervous at first but now they prefer to continue this scheme.

With the success of the work-from-home arrangement, the company had the confidence to explore and establishing other locations such as in Cape Breton.

“Our leadership team initially considered Cape Breton, but no one knew how to progress it. The restructuring of our office to a work-from-home model and NSBI’s involvement was fundamental in moving that forward and making it happen,” says Cable.

An assessment with the NSBI and Cape Breton Partnership showed that Cape Breton has the competitive advantage over other locations. Other than the data gathered and being known for its coastal views, hiking trails, and Celtic culture; the company shared that they were touched by how genuine NSBI and the Cape Breton Partnership’s interest was in seeing their operations and the remote workforce succeed. For them, it was obvious that the growth of their company and quality job creation were important to everyone involved.
