If you are a hardworking youth, aged 16 to 24 years old, and looking for a meaning work experience; then you maybe eligible for Youth Worx! This is a program of Halifax that offers deserving youth 24 weeks of paid job and life skill building with employment barriers. It is formally called Youth Live and it allows participants to gain hands-on work experience operating the Youth Worx Café in the Sackville Sports Stadium and delivering and repairing green carts on behalf of the municipality. In addition, they will also have the chance to participate in job readiness workshops to improve their employability skills.
Through these jobs, the youth will experience working at a café, be in the customer service, cash management, and will improve leadership skills. They will also have an access to different learning sessions such as life skill development; job search tools and techniques; interview techniques; and other job-related skills.
They can also receive certifications such as the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). This certification is a comprehensive system for providing health and safety information on hazardous products intended for use, handling, or storage in Canadian workplaces.
Another certificate they can get through this program is the First Aid Training: Emergency First Aid Certificate. In this training, they are taught of methods for providing basic, urgent assistance to injured or ill individuals. Through a combination of instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice, you will learn how to determine the severity of a patient’s condition and practice safe intervention when providing them with emergency support.
Lastly, is the Food Safety Certificate or also called the Food Handler Certificate. This is awarded to Food Handlers of all kinds (chefs, servers, dishwashers, food business owners, etc.). Food safety training is one of the best ways you can gain the fundamental knowledge and skills required to handle food safely in a food business such as a restaurant of café, or at home.
The program hours are from Mondays to Fridays with scheduled shifts. Participants will receive a training allowance based on a 32.5 hour work week, for up to 24 weeks.
