Not all residents have their own transportation. Most of them use public utility vehicles such as buses or taxis. Some of these commuters also need some special assistance which make it difficult for them to use conventional taxis. That’s where Extra Care Taxi comes in!
Extra Care Taxi is a locally owned taxi service based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The business was founded out of a desire to serve the public with a high-quality accessible taxi service in a trustworthy, caring, and safe manner while offering assistance to those who require it.
Without paying extra cost, they have a fleet of accessible vehicles with personnel that have been carefully chosen, trained, licensed, and are prepared to go above and beyond for their clients.
This company is an extension of SeniorsTransit which has a goal of providing safe, reliable and compassionate transportation service for seniors and those with mobility needs in the Halifax Regional Municipality and surrounding areas that delivers peace of mind for families and loved ones.
The Halifax Regional Municipality is pleased to support this new accessible taxi service by granting the company a three-year contract to provide an accessible taxi service for passengers who are unable to use conventional taxis. The municipality’s support is based on the complaints from residents and visitors saying that there are a few accessible cars available for hire, which made it difficult for people who needed accessible taxis to go on impromptu trips. They also have a feedback on some providers that requires higher costs for providing accessible taxi service.
This action is also in support of the HRM’s Accessibility Strategy, which calls for the establishment of a welcoming community for people of all abilities in the Halifax region and demands the creation of an inclusive environment for people with disabilities.
The municipality will continue to subsidize Extra Care Taxi to help cover the greater expense of providing an accessible cab service while customers will pay the standard taxi rate for their travels.
