SACKVILLE BUSINESS AWARDS
I would like to congratulate the Sackville Business Association for the fantastic work they do for our local businesses, and on Monday August 30th, they were recognized for it again. I’m happy to share that they’ve received the Halifax Library’s Community Impact Award, and there is no doubt in my mind that they will continue to be an excellent resource in the riding.
CANADA SUMMER JOBS
I recently had the opportunity to drop into some of the organizations and businesses in the riding to thank them for participating in our Canada Summer Jobs program with certificates. Through the program, over 380 young people were employed in the Sackville— Preston—Chezzetcook riding, gaining experience in the workforce. Providing opportunities to our younger generations has been a major priority for our government, and I appreciate all of the efforts made from within our communities to carry out these important opportunities. Thank you to our local businesses who opened their doors to young workers this summer, and congratulations to all participants involved!
REACHING HOME FUNDING
I also have more big news on the housing front. At the end of August, our government has announced over $2 billion in support of three major initiatives designed to build up to 17,000 new homes.
Funds are earmarked through our previous two budgets to:
Extend the Rapid Housing Initiative – supports projects that target those experiencing or at risk of homelessness
Create new units through Affordable Housing Innovation Fund – encourages new funding models and innovative building techniques in the affordable housing sector
Create a rent-to-own stream – help housing providers develop and test models and projects.
Housing remains a top priority of this government, and we will continue to invest in solutions for everyone.
CRTC 9-8-8 SUICIDE PREVENTION LINE
The CRTC has announced a new mental health crisis and suicide prevention line, and I want to make sure our residents of Sackville—Preston—Chezzetcook know about the resource. Canadians will either be able to call or text 9-8-8, which will connect them to counseling. It is my understanding that it will be implemented by telephone and wireless service providers, and I look forward to further news as to when Canadians can start accessing it.
KEEPING TAXES LOW FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS BY MAKING THE WEALTHIEST PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE
Since 2015, our Liberal government has worked hard to make life more affordable for the middle class and ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share. That’s why the first thing we did was cut taxes for the middle class by raising them on the wealthiest one percent.
Even as many have struggled these past two difficult years, the demand for ultra-luxury goods has remained strong among the wealthiest. Starting September 1st, those buying private jets, yachts, and luxury cars will be asked to pay more. It is the right and fair thing to do.
I hope my fellow Nova Scotians were able enjoy the very beautiful summer we had culminating in a happy Labour Day weekend to cap it off. As a former educator, I’m very familiar with enjoying the last long weekend of the summer before school starts again, but here we are! I want to begin by wishing all the kids in the riding a safe and fun school year and remind our drivers to slow down and drive with care in our school zones.
All the best, Darrel Samson
