Hal-Con is a sci-fi, fantasy and gaming convention run completely by much-too-dedicated volunteers. It is the largest costumed event in Atlantic Canada that will take place at the new Halifax Convention Centre, located on Argyle Street between Sackville St. and Prince St. Events will start on the 28th of October until the 30th.
Fill your weekend with excitement, panels with celebrities, activities, educational seminars, and exciting events for people of all ages in a warm, carefree setting. Hal-Con is a blast because it combines the best aspects of a Comic Con with a Maritime Kitchen Party.
In 2008, there was an idea to revive an event that focuses on science fiction and gaming convention. A group of enthusiastic people started working on organizing a new Hal-Con, taking the name from an earlier Halcon convention that had existed years earlier. A fantastic first new event resulted from more than two years of planning, funding, and labor. Nearly 1500 fans in costume from all across the Maritimes descended upon the Lord Nelson Hotel to celebrate the rebirth of science fiction and fantasy. Canada-wide coverage of the event was provided through a Space Channel segment on InnerSPACE.
Some of the biggest names in science fiction, fantasy, and gaming have visited Halifax, Nova Scotia, since 2010, thanks to this conference with a strong focus on the local community. Jim Beaver (2017), Gates McFadden (2016), John de Lancie (2015), Mark Sheppard (2014), Billy Dee Williams (2013), René Auberjonois (2012), Erin Gray (2011), and Walter Koenig are just a few of the famous people who frequent Hal-Con (2010). The largest science fiction, fantasy, and gaming convention in Atlantic Canada should take place in Halifax, the geographic center of the Maritimes, in our opinion.
The main purpose of Hal-Con is to host an awesome convention every year and host events year-round to bring together people to build and enhance our community. The volunteers behind this convention are dedicated in promoting pop, geek, and nerd culture. They continue to work toward establishing ourselves as a cornerstone of Nova Scotia by blending into the environment of Halifax’s landmark events and having a beneficial impact on both the culture and the economy through a variety of events.
One of Hal-Con’s notable accomplishments is its community work. Their annual Charity Auction, which takes place throughout the weekend of the science fiction and gaming conference, is their primary fundraising activity. The IWK and The Kids Help Phone, two of their organizations, get the auction’s proceeds. All year long, they are dedicated to helping the neighborhood and various charity. All throughout the year, you can see members of their Community Events Team and their costumed volunteers at events in the HRM.
What are you waiting for? Come and join the festivities and fun at Hal-Con!
