Mount Saint Vincent University installed Dr. Joël Dickinson as its 14th President and Vice-Chancellor on Friday, November 4, 2022, at a ceremony held in the Rosaria Student Centre, Mount Saint Vincent University.
Guests were welcomed by MSVU Board Chair Amanda Dean, and remarks by Professor Dr. Sheila Cote-Meek, Vice-President Equity, People and Culture, York University were well received by those in attendance. At the conclusion of the installation and the presentation of salutations, Dr. Dickinson spoke eloquently of how proud she is to assume this important roll at such an important institution.
As a leader in online and experiential learning, and based on a strong tradition of social responsibility, Mount Saint Vincent University takes a personalized approach to education to nurture socially responsible global citizens. Founded in 1873, the Mount has been nationally recognized for having one of the lowest student-to-professor ratios, for providing students early access to valuable research opportunities, for its legacy in the advancement of women, and for facilitating critical advancements in food security, healthy aging, literacy, and childhood development. Before joining MSVU, Dr. Dickinson was Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Laurentian University and held the positions of Acting Associate Vice-President of Teaching and Learning (2020-2021), and Chair of the university’s Department of Psychology.
Throughout her career, she has been focused on the impacts of decisions on students, as well as meaningful collaboration with faculty and staff colleagues. Born and raised in New Brunswick, she has previously taught at the University of New Brunswick and Mount Allison University. Dr. Dickinson holds a Psychology Honours, Bachelor of Arts, and PhD in Psychology from the University of New Brunswick.
She has experience in development and training for diversity and inclusion workshops. She has a successful teaching and research career, winning the Laurentian University Teaching Excellence award in 2016. She is an active community volunteer and has worked with many non-profit organizations and advisory boards, including the Women in Cognitive Science Canada Advisory Committee and Réseau Access Network.
Throughout her career she has demonstrated her commitment to engaging with the local community and continues to be an advocate for those overcoming situations of adversity to succeed. Congratulations Dr. Dickinson! Welcome to Nova Scotia!
