Nova Scotia Heritage Day Celebrations!

Every year on the third Monday in February, Nova Scotia Heritage Day is a time to remember and honor the extraordinary people, places, and events that have helped to shape this province’s distinctive heritage.

Rita Joe, a Mi’kmaw poet from the Eskasoni and We’koqma’q First Nations, will be honored in Nova Scotia this year, February 20th.

Author and We’koqma’q Mi’kmaq Community member Elder Rita (Bernard) Joe had a crucial role in opening doors for other Mi’kmaq writers. Her greatest dream was that her people would produce more works and “that the children would read it.” The nickname “Gentle Warrior” given to Elder Rita would later serve as the title of a poem about her.

Here is a list of events to celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage Day from Family Fun Halifax:

Sackville Snow Days Festival
The annual Sackville Snow Days festival takes place over the long weekend in February. A weekend of family-friendly winter activities is organized by the Sackville Business Association with the help of numerous community clubs, organizations, businesses, and volunteers. Head to Lower Sackville this February 17-20 with your family and enjoy!

DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN Halifax’s Heritage Day Light Show
The Downtown Halifax Business Commission has created a series of eye-catching light works and shows called DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN. It has vibrant light projection performances that help brighten the gloomy winter nights. Witness the Heritage Day Light Show this February 17-20 at Downtown Halifax.

Hatfield Farms Family Day Round Ups
Hatfield Farm offers everything from wagon and sleigh rides to the ideal location for your spectacular wedding day or corporate excursion, all while being only a short drive from the city. They also have pony rides, a petting zoo, and playgrounds for children. Hatfield Farm can also be the ideal location for your child’s upcoming birthday celebration or just a pleasant family vacation.

Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada Winter Games
The long-track speed skating competitions for the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada Winter Games will be held at the Emera Oval from February 18–25. All are welcome to attend these events and support the top athletes competing in our area, even if they are closed to the general public.
