Every year on the third Monday in February, Nova Scotia Heritage Day is a time to remember and honor the extraordinary people, places, and events that have helped to shape this province’s distinctive heritage.
Rita Joe, a Mi’kmaw poet from the Eskasoni and We’koqma’q First Nations, will be honored in Nova Scotia this year, February 20th.
Author and We’koqma’q Mi’kmaq Community member Elder Rita (Bernard) Joe had a crucial role in opening doors for other Mi’kmaq writers. Her greatest dream was that her people would produce more works and “that the children would read it.” The nickname “Gentle Warrior” given to Elder Rita would later serve as the title of a poem about her.
