from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West

Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s and Rotary’s news and activities with the communities we serve. In keeping with our aim to feature Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus, this issue highlights the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Area of Focus.

During March, Rotary is celebrating its commitment to create healthier communities by supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Clean water and sanitation are a human right. But in Ghana alone 7 million people are at risk from waterborne diseases. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.

While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to also improve sanitation facilities in undeveloped countries. We don’t just build wells and walk away. Members start by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure and then add education programs to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.

Prior to the pandemic, our club had committed to a project to support “Help 2 Overcome” (H2O), whose vision is a world where all children will have access to clean water and sanitation in schools. We hope to complete the project this year, which focuses on providing water and sanitation for girls in schools in Kigai, Rwanda. The project will provide washrooms with compostable toilets, cubicles with doors, and hand basins for 200 children with mental and physical disabilities. For more information, please go to: https://www.help2overcome.org/

This is a reminder of the 2023 version of our very successful Rotary Adventure Club launch, with more exciting trips including Niagara Falls ($2,600 value), a New York City getaway ($3,300), Hockey Night in Las Vegas ($3,000), Cabo san Lucas ($4,700), Ireland ($5,500) and a Sailing Trip off Croatia ($7,200)! Tickets are $100. By joining the club, you not only have several chances to win fabulous trips, but you help us serve our community. Everybody wins!

Time is running out! The first draw for 2023 takes place on 14 March. To buy your tickets and for more information, go to: https://rotaryadventureclub.ca

Our Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest welcomes everyone to explore community service with us! We pride ourselves on being diverse and inclusive – and we’re friendly! We currently meet virtually (in person when pandemic circumstances allow) every Tuesday from 1145 to 1 pm. at Freeman’s on Dutch Village Road in Fairview.
