from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West
Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s and Rotary’s news and activities with the communities we serve. In keeping with our aim to feature Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus, this issue highlights the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Area of Focus.
During March, Rotary is celebrating its commitment to create healthier communities by supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Clean water and sanitation are a human right. But in Ghana alone 7 million people are at risk from waterborne diseases. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.
While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to also improve sanitation facilities in undeveloped countries. We don’t just build wells and walk away. Members start by providing toilets and latrines that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure and then add education programs to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.
Prior to the pandemic, our club had committed to a project to support “Help 2 Overcome” (H2O), whose vision is a world where all children will have access to clean water and sanitation in schools. We hope to complete the project this year, which focuses on providing water and sanitation for girls in schools in Kigai, Rwanda. The project will provide washrooms with compostable toilets, cubicles with doors, and hand basins for 200 children with mental and physical disabilities.
