There’s nothing quite like filling a basket full of delectable delights and heading out to your favorite park or beach to enjoy a relaxed day in the sun when the temperature rises and the sun shines stronger. The possibilities for the ideal picnic fare are endless, ranging from savory sandwiches to sweet fruit salads.
Halifax Public Gardens
The Halifax Public Gardens are the ideal location for a midsummer picnic. Take a leisurely stroll around the lovely paths while seeing the immaculately kept flowerbeds and the tranquil fountains. In the grassy area on the gardens’ southern side, where there is plenty of room to play, try putting up your basket. Or, on a Sunday, attend one of the 2:00 p.m. concerts in the Public Gardens Summer Concert Series, which will begin on June 25th, 2023.
Halifax Commons
A family picnic is perfect at the Halifax Commons. Our preferred pick from the available acres is the Bell Road-adjacent Central Common. A playground, skate park, paddling pool, and a refreshingly chilly swimming pool are all available there and are all free to use. The Emera Oval, a great location for summer roller skating, is just across the street. The ideal family outing!
Seaview Park
It was controversially decided to turn Africville, a neighborhood in Halifax’s North End, into an off-leash dog park. Thankfully, the park was shut down in February 2016, thus Seaview Park is now a great location for a picnic with your family. At the historic sites of Skinner’s Well or Tibby’s Pond, savor your sandwiches. If you want to picnic from Tuesday to Sunday, make sure to visit the Africville Museum, a priceless archive housed in the restored Seaview Baptist Church.
Leighton Dillman Park
One of the nicest spots to picnic in Halifax-Dartmouth is Leighton Dillman, a lovely hillside park that is a part of the Dartmouth Common and is located close to the Zatzman Sportsplex in Downtown Dartmouth. Every Saturday, during the season, from noon to three o’clock, the Park Avenue Community Oven (Opening June 10th, 2023) at Leighton Dillman Park in Dartmouth is open. Anyone is welcome to bring bread dough, pizzas, flatbread, tortillas, or anything you can bake in a pan or pot.
Point Pleasant Park
Point Pleasant Park provides picnickers with a calm and tranquil setting and is situated at the southernmost point of the Halifax Peninsula. Discover its historical sites, woodland pathways, and spectacular Atlantic Ocean views. Point Pleasant Park has numerous peaceful areas where your family can dine al fresco, but we recommend a wonderful family picnic near the Cambridge Battery at around 6:00 pm. That gives you plenty of time to witness a Shakespeare by the Sea production, which is scheduled to begin on July 8th, 2023, every night of the summer (other than Mondays), at 7:00 p.m.
