Building new schools, addressing population growth, and investing in present schools are the main objectives of Nova Scotia’s new five-year school capital plan.
The Province is spending up to $1 billion over several years on new schools, repairs to existing ones, and the addition of modular classrooms.
“Our new capital plan addresses aging school infrastructure and population growth in communities across Nova Scotia,” said Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Becky Druhan. We are taking a systematic approach to land acquisitions across the province as well as facility replacement and enhancements in collaboration with our partners.
On June 16, at one of the schools that will be replaced, New Germany Elementary School in Lunenburg County, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development unveiled the plan.

Four new replacement schools will each receive around $263 million under the revised capital plan. This includes:
- replacing New Germany Elementary and New Germany Rural High with a single, pre-kindergarten to grade 12 school that will house 500 students and incorporate a skilled trades center.
- École des Beaux-Marais at Porters Lake will be replaced by a new pre-primary to Grade 8 school; the current institution has about 250 students.
- two additional replacement schools, to be revealed soon.
The Province is putting $948 million into the five-year plan; $240.8 million of that is new money, and the remaining $707.2 million is part of the provincial capital plan, which was announced in March.
