The Sandy Lake – Sackville River Regional Park Coalition (SL-SRPC) wishes to thank the volunteer and career firefighters for their exemplary work in the protection of our homes, businesses, and forests during the recent wildfires. Due to the efforts of the firefighters, the forests, homes, and businesses around Sandy Lake were saved from destruction. It was an extraordinary sight to see the air crews refilling their water bombers/helicopters from Sandy Lake to tackle the nearby fire.
The SL-SRPC is a volunteer coalition of 31 groups trying to save 1800 acres in the Sandy Lake watershed, including those to the west of the lake where the fire was located, from development. These 1800 acres contain significant stands of what is now, unfortunately, very rare old growth forest (less than 0.06% of all our N.S. forests), important wetlands, extensive drumlins, and over 24 threatened plants and animals.
Again, we would like to thank ALL the volunteers and staff who helped to save this valuable community asset.
