As the son of a Veteran, my Father served in the Navy on board a Corvette in WWII, and a Nurse, my Mother worked at St. John’s Hospital during that same war, I know how devastating war is.
While they never spoke in detail of the effects of war, my parents always made it clear that nothing good ever comes out of war!
Yes, historically it was necessary to engage in war with Tyrants to ensure our democracy. However, the death and destruction and years of trauma that occur as a result, is never good.
In today’s world we see this death, destruction, and devastation, instantly through the media and social media. Which is why we should encourage our leaders to do everything they can to ensure war is avoided at all costs.
While we cannot allow terrorists to reign their terror on people with impunity, we must ensure our response to such terror does not affect innocent civilians.
We in Canada are fortunate that we have lived in peace for many years. This Remembrance Day let’s not only think of those who fought for our Freedom, let’s remember those who are fighting for peace in the world today.
I wear my Poppy with pride for my Mother and Father and for all those who fought to ensure our Freedom! Please be sure to help our Veteran’s by donating to the Poppy Fund when you see one in a local mall or grocery store.
It is very important that we let our children know how important it is to remember and honour our Veteran’s as well. I encourage you to not only attend a Memorial Service on Remembrance Day, but to take your children or grandchildren, or some neighbourhood children to a service on that day.
Wishing you all a wonderful Fall season! May we continue to live in peace and tranquility!
