Happy December everyone! I hope you’re as excited as I am for the holiday break (it’s been on the back of my mind since September started). However, with this joyful vacation from work and school comes a looming cloud of procrastination from those of us that have been putting off our holiday shopping for others. As the holiday season rolls in, it seems to become harder and harder to find the “perfect” gift. As a student, I can also say that rapidly rising retail prices aren’t helping in this endeavour. If you are looking to give a unique and budget friendly gift to someone you love, why not check out some local goodies or make your own “do-it-yourself” crafts!
For those of you looking to get a bit crafty this holiday season, I have compiled a list of several gifts you can easily make from the comfort of your own home! First up, with a tree ornament of your choice and whatever decorating supplies you want, you can customise your own ornament! If you want to get extra creative, try getting some oven bake clay from a crafts store and creating your own ornament. You can also get a clear plastic ornament and put some pictures inside it! Second, for the book lovers in your life, try making a scrapbook of your year together. All you’ll need is a book with plain paper inside, some pictures, stickers, tape, ribbon, and whatever else comes to mind! Lastly, a favourite of mine are crocheted or knitted crafts! This gift idea not only gives you the chance to give someone a completely one of a kind gift, but also might come in handy as a hobby for when you’re bored. I recommend starting with some scarves, coasters, or book/computer sleeves if you have never crocheted or knitted before, but if you’re feeling adventurous, try out some hats/ mittens, stuffed animals, or tote bags!
If you don’t have much time to make all your gifts, don’t worry because our town is packed full with unique goodies just waiting to be gifted this holiday season. First off, try checking out The 5K cafe in Bayers Lake. They have tons of unique, locally owned knick knacks that would make great presents such as jams, jellies, coffee beans, and soap! Secondly, head on over to the Halifax Brewery and Seaport markets. From posters to delicious food to cute mementos, you’re sure to find something for everyone there. Lastly, a really special find are Robert Brownell’s handmade Great Santa and Scandinavian Christmas Wood Sprites. He hand makes these as well as other unique wood carvings in the Clayton Park area which are bound to make lasting memories!
The holiday season is meant to be a joyous and love-filled occasion, but this can often be overlooked by price tags of the hottest new gifts. Remember to always choose quality over quantity and the quality of spending time with those you cherish over anything else. Happy holidays everyone and I’ll see you in the new year!
