Challenges are a common part of life, and it may be heartbreaking and exhausting to see our loved ones struggle. Our responsibility as friends and family goes beyond simple sympathy to include actively encouraging and tending to those enduringly trying times. In these difficult times, consider the following meaningful ways to offer comfort and support:
Watch for the warning signs
A person may exhibit behavioral changes or other indicators that they need assistance if they are in distress or are considering suicide. These warning indicators will vary from person to person and could include retreat from social situations, impatience, or loss of interest in activities they usually love. They could start abusing drugs or alcohol more frequently, participate in risky behaviors, or discuss suicide or depressing topics.
Talk it out
Show sympathy and encouragement to a friend or family member who appears to be struggling. Find out how they’re doing and how you can support them. At times, listening to them and letting them know you support them could be the best thing you can do.
Tell the person you care about them and want to support them if you have any reason to believe they may be thinking about suicide. Find out whether they are contemplating suicide. Those who talk about suicide may feel less isolated. Pay close attention to what they have to say and accept that they are in pain. Remind them that assistance is available and that they deserve it. And don’t forget to stay in contact and follow up to find out how they’re doing.
Seek help
Another way you may support a friend or family member is by urging them to get in touch with a crisis line, a counselor, or another reliable individual.
Anyone in Canada can text or call 9-8-8 to speak with a certified responder for assistance with suicide prevention. In both English and French, the 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It provides understanding, nonjudgmental, and culturally relevant assistance.
It takes a combination of compassion, useful help, and constant presence to support family and friends throughout difficult times. Together, you can overcome these obstacles and build a support system that will last a lifetime, strengthening your bonds. Never forget that your presence can have a big impact on someone’s path to recovery and resilience.
