from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West
Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s and Rotary’s news and activities with the communities we serve. This issue features Maternal and Child Health, one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus and the Rotary theme for April.
Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.
Rotary provides education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
Our club has been a long supporter of the Chebucto Family Centre in Spryfield, whose mission is to “nurture and enhance the quality of life of families through the delivery of community-based programs and services”. These services include health and wellness programs, prenatal and parenting classes, a Volunteer Doula Program, and a Family Home Childcare Agency. The Centre was an important beneficiary among the many that we supported in the Spryfield area during our preCOVID Toonies for Change fundraiser. We have continued our support through our food bank collection during the annual Spryfield Santa Claus parade. Most recently, our club made a donation to the Centre in support of their Doula program.
Our 2024 Rotary Adventure Club early-bird draw was held on 12 March, but there is still time to join for chances to win one of our monthly draws for fabulous trips over the next six months. Our 9 April draw is for a 5-night excursion to Las Vegas, including five nights at a 4 star resort on the strip, an excursions on the Grand Canyon Rim Bus Tour, a visit to the Hoover Dam with optional tours to the Skywalk and on Las Vegas Helicopter Night Flight.
Our Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest welcomes everyone to explore community service with us! We pride ourselves on being diverse and inclusive – and we’re friendly! We currently meet in person every Tuesday from 1145 to 1 pm. at Smitty’s on Lacewood.
