Abe Toulany of Leo’s Donair in Timberlea proudly presented the official food of Nova Scotia at the recent Saltscapes Expo! The big moment for Abe and the company was on the culinary stage with well known kilted Chef Alain Bosse and team.
Abe and Chef Al cooked up some famous 4 oz donair burger slider patties in front of a friendly and loving crowd on the live culinary demonstration stage at the Expo. Abe shared how Leo’s first introduced their tasty donair burgers at the Apex food show in 2010 which have been a hit with donair lovers ever since.
Abe shared the story of how the business started and became a successful family business. Leo’s Donair began its journey in 1981, when its founder, Abe’s father and mother, Leo Toulany and his wife, Jean, began supplying ground beef to local businesses.
When asked how the family got into the donair business Abe said, “As the love of Donair’s grew in our home province of Nova Scotia, so did the demand for supplying restaurants. Since then, my father, Leo, has built his small operation into a larger Donair production facility and is now the province’s leading supplier.”
I have known Leo and his family my whole adult life and I know Leo takes great pride in providing quality Donair products, gluten free included.
Abe said, “It was hard not to feel proud when the Province of Nova Scotia declared the Donair as its official food in 2015.”
Over the years, Leo has perfected his product, and is undoubtedly recognizable from the very first bite. Leo’s Donair is truly an East Coast Tradition.
Abe wants to share with Donair lovers that Leo’s is proudly HACCP certified (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) which is a global food safety requirement for assessing, mitigating, and controlling food safety hazards across the spectrum of food production. All products are available fresh or frozen.
Abe would like to thank Amber MacLean, Sacha Smith, and the team at Taste of Nova Scotia for organizing the demonstration, along with many thanks to Saltscapes Expo and Al the Kilted Chef and team!
