On June 1-2, ten teams from around the world will compete for glory while sailing at incredible speeds in the middle of Halifax Harbour for everyone to witness. This will mark the highly anticipated premiere of SailGP’s adrenaline-fueled racing in Canada. SailGP is bringing the heat to Halifax, and it’s going to be massive, with everything from exciting races to vibrant street celebrations. It might be challenging to stay up to date with all that is going on during this big athletic event.
SailGP is the most thrilling sailing competition in the world. National teams compete in quick, high-stakes races at recognizable stadium-style locations all over the world in the global championship. The fastest sailors compete aboard identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans, reaching speeds of nearly 100 km/h in this high-tech, fast-paced event.
June 1st and 2nd, 2024, are the scheduled SailGP race days. From Georges Island to the Macdonald Bridge, the action-packed scene is set smack in the middle of Halifax Harbour. With plenty of room to see all the action, the races will be viewable from the waterfronts in Halifax and Dartmouth. At several locations throughout the city, spectators may enjoy the race and celebrations. This is the first SailGP event to be held in Canadian territorial waters.
How does it work?
The SailGP Championship consists of an extensive schedule of events held at renowned locations worldwide. Ten contending national teams face off in thrilling competitions held on several continents in an attempt to win the championship.
Each Sail Grand Prix consists of six planned races spread over two days. Events are composed of many races. Three fleet races are held on the first day, and the final race on Sunday will determine the event winner. The remaining two fleet races are held on the second day. These swift races, which run roughly 15 minutes each, are fierce and exhilarating.
Teams will be putting everything on the line to advance up the season leaderboard in the lead-up to San Francisco’s Grand Final at the 11th stop on the record-breaking 13-event schedule for Season 4.
