Dear readers, happy May! I hope you are all starting to feel the weight of winter lift off your shoulders and can feel the heat of summer approaching. As a student, I always find that I have a bit more time in the summer to go out and about than during the school year and, just in case any of you were looking for a new adventure, I thought I would share some hidden gems with you all! Specifically, I wanted to share some local bookstores I’ve had the chance to visit recently. For all you book fanatics or those of you that just like the ambiance of bookstores (I personally fall within both categories), grab your bookmark and a nice cup of tea, and join me in exploring some underrated spots around the area!
First up, Halifax Vintage Co-op on Agricola Street is a relatively new consignment store with lots of really cool finds. I stopped by a few weeks ago and managed to find a Beatrix Potter Jumbo Storybook of The Tale of Benjamin Bunny (my favourite childhood book). They have a pretty big book selection but also tons of clothes, gizmos, jewellery, vinyl records, and more, so there’s definitely something for everyone!
Next, Trident Booksellers & Café on Hollis Street is in no way new, but no matter how many times you go there, you’ll never feel bored. They even have a café inside so you can browse books and baked goods while they brew you a specialty cup of coffee or tea. Their checkerboard floor definitely sets them apart from anywhere else I’ve been and adds to their cozy atmosphere! If you’re willing to make the commute out of the city, Otis & Clementine on St Margarets Bay Rd will not disappoint. Not only do they have a huge selection of books, but they have a few cats walking around! Yes, you read that right, cats! I had the chance to visit when they got a new litter of kittens in and it was one of the most adorable experiences I’ve ever had. They also have coffee/tea for purchase so what more could you really want!
Somewhere I’ve been really into recently is Bookmark on Spring Garden Road! They have the coolest knick knacks, accessories, puzzles, and stationary for sale. I just bought a tote bag from them and it’s not only one of the highest quality bags I own, but it also has a really nice flower print on it. Also, if you’re really into your writing utensils, this is definitely the place to go for a huge variety of pens, pencils, and more. A few last suggestions include; Capricorn Books on Kearney Lake Road, Agricola Street Books, and Open Book Coffee on Strawberry Hill Street!
My reading interests range from poetry to bird lore to science to drama so you can trust me when I say that all these places really epitomise the saying of having something for everyone. I hope you get the chance to enjoy them as much as I do and, if you go, make sure to step outside your comfort zone a little and pick up a book because it calls out to you and not just because it’s what you would typically read!
