On hot days, and especially during a heat wave, these four tips will help you keep moving while being safe.
Plan ahead
To find out when the heat is coming, pay attention to weather alerts and predictions. Try to reschedule practices and games for later in the day when it’s cooler, or wait until the heat wave passes, if there is one. If you exercise with a trainer or in a group, make sure they have a strategy in place for modifying the routines in the event of extreme heat.
Be aware
Keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion, such as lightheadedness, nausea, headaches, and fast breathing or heartbeat. Go somewhere cold and drink some water.
If you or anybody with you is experiencing confusion, a loss of consciousness, an extremely high body temperature, or not sweating in the heat, call 911.
Less is more
Achieving specific running distances or number of repetitions of an exercise may be expected as indicators of your workout success. Attempt, nevertheless, to lower your standards. Avoid trying to perform at your best while it’s really hot outside. Don’t use more energy when your body is already exerting extra effort to stay cool.
