Experts from around the globe teach in MSVU’s science programs, which also offer excellent access to undergraduate research opportunities. So, it should come as no surprise that MSVU is home to some of the top scientific students.
Recently, the Canadian Society for Chemistry has given two MSVU graduates distinguished national awards.
The Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) is a national, not-for-profit, professional association that unites chemistry students and professionals who work in industry, academia and government. The CSC is recognized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) as the technical organization for Canadian chemists.
Erin Wiggins took home the Chemical Education Award, and Ailish Sullivan was given the Science Atlantic Science Communication Award. The 2024 Science Atlantic-CIC Chemistry Conference (ChemCon), which took place at Cape Breton University from May 23 to 25, featured the presentation of both awards.
With her talk, “Exploring Chemical Sources of Diffuse Interstellar Bands Through Quantum Mechanics,” Ailish was given the Science Atlantic Science Communication Award, which goes to the student who can effectively communicate science concepts to their peers the best. According to Science Atlantic, the winner will get a monetary reward, a letter of recommendation, and the chance to collaborate with the Atlantic Student Research Journal team on an article about their research that will be written and published.
Ailish, who is originally from Florence, Newfoundland, earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry at MSVU this past spring. She received the university’s President’s Prize after graduating with first-class honours and the highest aggregate. Ailish is eager to continue her education and is looking at possibilities for more study. She has a significant interest in health care and want to work in a profession that allows her to use her innovative and interpersonal talents.
Professors of chemistry judged the Chemical Education Award, which Erin won for her research presentation, “Adapting Titration Experiments for Students with Colour-Vision Deficiencies.” According to Science Atlantic, the Chemical Institute of Canada is dedicated to furthering the chemical sciences and engineering through its three constituent societies and award presenters, the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), and the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology (CSCT).
Erin, who is originally from Sydney, Nova Scotia, received first-class honours in her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry from MSVU this spring. Erin has been accepted into the University of Ottawa’s Master of Chemistry program, where she will study chemical education. Erin plans to pursue a doctorate in pharmacy or additional research in chemical education after that. Erin finished her honors thesis on Alzheimer’s disease research during her final year at MSVU.
