Keshen Goodman Library Reopens, Fairview Speed Humps, Dunbrack/Willett Arrows, New Playgrounds and How to Apply for HRM Election Jobs

KESHEN GOODMAN LIBRARY REOPENS
Keshen Goodman Library has reopened after a major renovation. The upgrades include a new glass-enclosed computer area for teens, a revamped children’s area with a two-story playhouse, and several small meeting rooms along the west wall for community groups. The library now features new air-handling and book delivery systems, sound-muffling ceiling panels, fresh white paint, and new carpeting. As HRM’s second busiest library, it is now bigger, brighter, and more enjoyable for staff and users.
FAIRVIEW TRAFFIC CALMING
Speed humps have been installed on Adelaide, Convoy, Coronation, Frederick, Rosedale, and Rufus streets in Fairview for traffic calming. Residential streets qualify for traffic calming based on criteria such as high pedestrian and vehicle traffic, proximity to schools, and evidence of speeding. Regional Council approves the program and budget, while HRM’s traffic safety experts select the specific streets that will receive traffic calming measures.
LEFT TURN ARROWS TO IMPROVE SAFETY AT DUNBRACK AND WILLETT INTERSECTION
The intersection of Dunbrack and Willett will have left turning arrows installed later this year due to concerns about traffic speeds on Dunbrack and visibility issues on Willett. This upgrade is part of the Road Safety Strategy approved by the Regional Council in July. HRM engineers have reviewed signalized intersections and are targeting those with the worst collision histories for improvements. The intersections of Joseph Howe/Dutch Village Road (both north and south) and Dunbrack/Main Avenue are also recommended for signal changes within the next 2-3 years.
NEW PLAYGROUND UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT DUC D’ANVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A new playground is under construction at Duc d’Anville Elementary School in Clayton Park, featuring climbing equipment, an accessible swing, and regular swings. The old gravel surface is being replaced with more accessible surfaces. This project is part of HRM Parks and Recreation’s regular playground renewal, which typically occurs every 15-20 years. As old playgrounds are replaced, they are made more accessible. Three other District 10 playgrounds—Burton Ettinger (Central Avenue playground), Castle Hill, and DJ Butler Park—are also scheduled for new equipment in the next year.
