It is a familiar tale to hear of the struggles of the restaurant industry these days. It hit rather close to home last week when I read multiple news articles regarding the challenges that the Easy Street Diner on Dutch Village Road was facing and the risk of the eatery’s closure.
I gained a connection to the diner prior to its opening when we bought the tables used by the previous tenant from Kelly-Jo. While these tables ended up at the now defunct Serpent Brewing, it helped us to solve a critical problem for us during the shortages in the pandemic. As a former local business owner, I respected that the diner has always prided itself on carrying local products and beverages where possible. The personnel share in this local flavour with co-owner Kelly-Jo Beck, a graduate in Culinary Management from Nova Scotia Community College. Inclusivity, family, tolerance, and quality are the four key pillars of the business.
The diner offers traditional burgers and sandwiches as well as several main courses. Pan fried haddock, meatloaf, and a vegan delight full of mixed vegetables highlight the offerings. Breakfast is served all day and includes traditional breakfasts, waffles, and fishcakes.
No diner is complete, however, without milkshakes. Easy Street offers these in both the standard non-alcoholic format as well as in an alcoholic “boozy” style for an extra charge. If milkshakes are not your desired sweet, there are also baked goods available for dessert. Local beer and wine, as well as many other non-alcoholic beverages, also line the menu.
As all plates are made fresh to order, they will accommodate options for vegetarians, vegans, and those requiring dairy-free. The diner also promises to be able to do any menu item gluten free. Finally, there is a kid’s menu available should your little one not have the appetite for a full plate.
If you have not had a chance to check them out, I highly encourage you to do so. Like many restaurants, now is a critical time to support them to ensure they are still here to provide delicious meals in the future.
