About the Event:
East Coast Bengali Society, a non-profit organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia celebrates Bengali Durga Puja with the event Anondomoyee SharodUtsav annually in fall as do all Bengali Hindus in the Indian subcontinent and across the world. Durga Puja is one of the most significant and vibrant cultural events in India, particularly in the state of West Bengal, where it is celebrated with unmatched grandeur and fervor. This festival has recently been acknowledged by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Think of it like mum’s last visit to her parents’, pets and kids in tow. Our Divine Mother Durga rides a ferocious lion. She is accompanied by her sons – Ganesh the remover of all obstacles, Kartik the handsome warrior, and the girls Lakshmi and Saraswati who can handle wealth and wisdom better than pros. The kids get to bring their rides too – the mouse, the peacock, the white owl and the swan. Dad–Shiva gets to stay behind and watch the fun and festivity from the heavenly Mount Kailash.
As we celebrate her visit with feasting, music, dance and artistic expressions she reminds us to keep fighting those inner demons (you know, like procrastination) with the force or Shakti within our spirits. She departs on Vijaya Dashami (the tenth day of the moon’s cycle), only instead of the Tupperware, she leaves behind blessings of peace and happiness for a chaotic and messy mortal family.
