Halifax becomes a hub of fall festivals and activities when the leaves change and the air gets brisk. October provides a variety of experiences for everyone, whether they are locals or tourists. This is a carefully chosen selection of fall-themed activities to do in Halifax this month.
Deepen your understanding of Mi’kmaw and Indigenous culture
October is Mi’kmaw History Month, a time to honor and commemorate the traditions and culture of the Mi’kmaw people.
The Mi’kmaq people’s ancestral and unceded region, Mi’kma’ki, is where Halifax is located. The Mi’kmaw Nation’s inhabitants have inhabited this region for thousands of years, and we recognize them as the land’s past, present, and future guardians.
This month, set aside some time to learn more about Mi’kmaw and Indigenous culture; visit a local exhibit or gallery to discover the distinct viewpoints and experiences of Indigenous artists from all around Turtle Island through artwork, artifacts, and personal narratives; and schedule an interactive workshop or event to attend this month.
Nocturne Halifax
Get your friends together and prepare for Nocturne, a citywide evening art event featuring interactive exhibits by amazing artists. It’s the ideal excuse to get out and explore because so many local companies are offering exclusive discounts, free samples, and entertaining programs.
Located in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nocturne Art at Night Society (Nocturne) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2008. Its mission is to provide the local arts community with a voice and agency through collaborations and exhibition opportunities.
The mission of Nocturne is to host important and timely art events of the highest creative and professional caliber, emphasizing the local art scene’s assets and including representatives from around the country and the world.
Treat your ears to some live tunes in intimate venues at a music festival
Nothing compares to curling up in front of fantastic live music in a small space as the weather becomes gloomy and the temperature drops.
This month, Halifax will experience two separate music festivals that evoke the essence of fall. At the Halifax Urban Folk Festival, enjoy a range of fun and relaxed performances, including head-banging ragers with all-femme punk band NOBRO and cozy solo appearances by Rose Cousins.
This month, the Festival of Today will also take place, offering amazing performances in little, quaint spaces that exude warmth. Occurring from October 10–13, the event is also offering an additional bonus show on October 30 at a dimly lit, charming deconsecrated chapel with one of Canada’s most beloved and mysterious songwriters, Destroyer.
Rejigged Festival, a celebration of Celtic music and dancing at St. Andrews United Church, takes place at the end of October. This festival offers a range of interesting seminars where you can learn traditional dance moves, experiment with Celtic instruments, or learn about the interesting history behind the tunes. It’s not only about the music, though. You’re sure to have a great time here whether you’re a music fan, a dancing enthusiast, or just looking for a distinctive Celtic experience.
October in Halifax is overflowing with possibilities to embrace the season. There is something for everyone, from outdoor experiences to cultural gatherings. So grab your sweater, enjoy the fall foliage, and immerse yourself in the colorful events that make Halifax a lovely place to be this October!
