Traveling abroad is best done in the fall. Since many popular destinations are off-season, you can expect to find better discounts and less visitors than during the busiest times of year.

Whether you are an experienced traveler or are leaving the country for the first time, these are the top five things you should know before traveling.

  1. Research your destination
Spend some time getting to know your destination. To ensure you are fully informed on important information, such as the ideal times to visit major attractions or lesser-known local treasures, you can consult books, blogs, Reddit, official travel websites, books, and library visits. Researching the available public transportation and tipping customs in your destination is also a smart idea.
  2. Check entry requirements
It’s possible that certain countries have particular regulations that you were unaware of. When you travel with a pet, for instance, you need thoroughly research the requirements of each nation. For your prescription medication to be allowed entry into Japan, you might require a letter from your doctor. It goes without saying that you should confirm the requirements for a passport and visa.
  3. Book everything early
Tourist destinations, particularly must-see locations like the Louvre in Paris, the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and Machu Picchu in Peru, tend to get booked up quickly. Make sure to pre-book your tickets online or with your travel agent; you might even be eligible for early-bird pricing. The last thing you want is to trek all the way to Amsterdam to view the Anne Frank House only to discover that they are all sold out.
  4. Be smart about what you bring
Packing half as much as you think you’ll need and concentrating on thoughtful packing is a useful tip. Items such as a small first-aid kit and a portable phone charger can be useful in an emergency. An e-reader might be a better option than a large stack of books and magazines. When exchanging cash, you’ll get a better deal at home. Just make sure your local bank has the money you need by giving them a call beforehand.
  5. Review your cell coverage
Did you know that unless you agree, service providers must inform you when you are roaming abroad and are not allowed to charge you more than $100 in roaming fees in a single billing cycle? To find out your possibilities, phone ahead of time as many also provide speak, text, and data plans for use outside of the country for a daily flat charge.

It’s a great experience to travel outside of Canada, but planning beforehand is essential to a hassle-free and exciting journey. You can prepare to make the most of your overseas experience by learning about the entry procedures, getting travel insurance, getting acquainted with local customs, organizing your funds, and keeping in touch with consular services.
