Social media can be equally entertaining, educational, and terrifying. There are downsides to social media use, even while the different platforms have integrated themselves into our everyday lives as means of keeping up with current events, entertaining ourselves, and connecting with friends and family. Here are four tips for staying safe on these platforms.

Use secure passwords
Make sure you create distinct, difficult-to-guess passwords for each social networking platform or app you sign up for. Your other accounts won’t be at risk of being compromised if one website is compromised. There should be a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols in every password.

Always use a private connection when accessing your online accounts. Your information may be compromised if you use public Wi-Fi networks to log in, like those in coffee shops or libraries.

Protect your privacy
Every social media site offers privacy settings that can be changed. These allow you to report improper information, block comments from particular people, and filter out words or phrases that you find offensive. To prevent others from tracking your location, you can also disable geolocation features.

Always use caution when disclosing too much personal information online. Children should be instructed not to publish or take pictures of themselves with their home address, school name, or the names of the sports teams they play on. Adults, however, should use caution when disclosing too many personal facts. Numerous times, thieves have broken into homes by using the information they discover on people’s social media accounts to identify that someone is on vacation and then locate their home address.

Pause before you post
You should carefully consider whether you want the message or image you are sharing to be on your “permanent record” before posting it online. You cannot prevent others from taking screenshots of your message and posting it elsewhere, even if the application says the post will be removed soon after it is posted.

Before posting, think about this simple question: Would I want my parents or kids to read this?

Take a break
The most crucial piece of advise is probably to avoid social media on a regular basis. The rush of receiving likes or follows can be addictive for many. Your career or education may suffer if you spend too much time on social media. Your eyesight, sleep patterns, and general health can all be negatively impacted by prolonged screen staring. Give yourself a time limit before using the internet, such as 30 minutes, and follow it.

You may more successfully navigate the technicalities of social media, create lasting relationships, and accomplish your objectives by following these tips.
