from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West
Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s news with the community we serve. This issue highlights one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service, Vocational service.
But first: Happy 2025! We hope you had a happy holiday season and that you are ready to meet the New Year. Let’s face it, it’d be difficult to be optimistic, when the world’s problems seem to get worse every year, with wars, climate change, inflation, homelessness and threats to democracy. That said, Rotarians tend to look at the bright side of things, and continuously look for opportunities to do good in our local and global communities.
We did just that recently. We participated in the Spryfield Santa Claus parade and collected $460 for the Chebucto Family Centre towards the good work they do. And we collaborated with the Joe Howe Atlantic Superstore by setting up a Christmas Tree adorned with “gift tags” suggesting gifts that store patrons could buy for a disadvantaged adult, teen, or child. We distributed hundreds of gifts to 5 separate non-profits in time for Christmas.
Rotary doesn’t just focus on volunteering our time. It’s about using our professional expertise – the very skills we hone in our careers and utilize in retirement in the service to others – to make a real difference. This is fundamental to every club. Vocational Service is about applying ethical standards to all that we undertake – through Rotary, in our personal lives, and in the workplace. Many of our members are retired but in addition to their skills, carry their ethical beliefs and behaviour in everything they do in “Service Above Self” (SAS). As part of their commitment to SAS every member is encouraged and expected to live by the FourWay-Test. In everything Rotarians think say or do we ask ourselves:
• Is it the TRUTH?
• Is it FAIR to all concerned?
• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Be kind to each other!
