Nowadays, a lot of parents think their kids will grow up with more financial challenges than they did, particularly when it comes to achieving major life goals like home ownership or retirement. Talking to your kids about money and fostering good financial habits at a young age is one approach to help prepare them for success.

Giving our kids the information and skills they need to manage money wisely is crucial as parents and guardians. Not only can early financial education enable children to make better financial decisions later in life, but it also lays a solid foundation for responsible adulthood. To assist you teach your children about money, consider the following useful tips:

Create age-specific finance goals
Teens and tweens can save up for a bigger purchase, such as a new laptop or a special activity. Younger children can learn how to save money at the grocery store by comparing costs of products or save their birthday money for a gift.

Provide an allowance
Think about starting small and asking parents who have children the same age what they’re giving. Consider linking the allowance to finishing chores like vacuuming or table setup.

Take your child along on bank visits
You can talk to a personal banker at your branch if you want to start your child’s savings journey or if you have a teenager who is prepared to make steps toward their financial goals.

Check out online resources
Children as young as three years old to as old as eighteen can benefit from financial literacy training at home using online resources and activities.

Develop a budget together
Search for tools for managing your finances. For instance, Teens with debit or credit card accounts can use TD’s MySpend tool to establish a budget and save money.

Through practical, real-world lessons that they can apply as they grow up, these tips guarantees that kids learn the financial knowledge they need to succeed in life.
