from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West
Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s and Rotary’s news and activities with the communities we serve. This issue highlights Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus, and something we in Canada take for granted. Through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, Rotarians mobilize resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-term change.
Rotary Action Groups are independent, Rotary-affiliated groups made up of people from around the world who are experts in a particular field, such as economic development, peace, addiction prevention, the environment, or water. The WASH Rotary Action Group was formed in 2007 by a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, and focused on WASH projects. Since then, it has facilitated hundreds of projects – helping clubs find partners, ensuring sustainability, stressing the importance of a needs-driven approach, and developing best practices. We encourage a holistic, integrated approach in which water is not the end but is rather the means to a better life and livelihood in the community. Most importantly, the WASH Rotary Action Group links water and sanitation to improved hygiene, better health, and empowerment of the community – especially women, irrigation and agriculture, education and literacy and, ultimately, child mortality.
Our annual Rotary Adventure Club fundraiser allows us to do what Rotarians do best, namely to serve our community, whether local or global. The 2025 version launches next month, starting with an early bird draw on April 1st $2500. for a trip to Orlando valued at $2,500. April through September we draw for a trip a month, including a Quebec City getaway ($3500), Cuba – Havana and Veradero ($3600), a New York City Escape ($4000), Spain- Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava, Gourmet Paris ($6800) and Iceland ($7000). All trips are for two people and include return airfare from Halifax and $500 spending money. These draws are very flexible. The winner gets a voucher which can be used within three years for the trip, or with which another trip can be negotiated with the travel agent. If winners don’t not want to travel, they can take 85% of the value of the trip. That’s not all! Each month we draw for four $100 prizes, so you can win the price of your ticket!
