Finally, it feels like the worst of winter is behind us now that April has arrived! As the ice melts and the first signs of green begin to emerge, it’s a reminder of how lucky we are to be surrounded by nature. With the changing season, it’s also a great time to reflect on how we can give back to the environment in small but meaningful ways. So, in this month’s column, I wanted to introduce some simple ways to be sustainable and help our environment!
First, let’s talk about some simple ways to repurpose everyday household items. We all have those old t-shirts sitting in the back of our closets so why not give them a second life? Cut them up into reusable cleaning rags or, if you’re feeling crafty, turn them into DIY tote bags! Glass jars are another household staple that can be put to good use. Instead of tossing them, use them as planters to grow some plants. You can even start with something simple, like replanting green onion roots or using a friend’s plant cuttings. Another easy and practical idea is to repurpose toilet paper rolls to keep cables and wires organized. Simply place your cords inside the roll to prevent them from tangling. You can even label or decorate the rolls for extra organization!
Who doesn’t love saving money? The good news is that you can be eco-friendly while also cutting costs! First, invest in reusable items. This may seem obvious, but if you’re still buying disposable water bottles, paper towels, or plastic bags, you’re likely spending way more in the long run. Switching to a reusable water bottle, cloth napkins, and silicone food storage bags not only reduces waste but also saves you money over time. Another budget-friendly and sustainable swap is making your own household cleaners. Instead of buying multiple cleaning products every year, try using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon. They’re affordable, nontoxic, and surprisingly effective! As a bonus, baking soda is especially great for scrubbing stains out of white mugs or the bottoms of pans.
Fast fashion has taken a serious toll on our planet, and unfortunately, many of the brands we see everyday contribute to this problem. Instead of supporting mass-produced, disposable clothing, consider shopping for sustainable alternatives. Thrift stores, ethical brands, and clothing made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and recycled fabrics are great options. Thrifting is not only better for the environment, but it’s also a fun and affordable way to build a unique wardrobe! Some of my favorite thrift/vintage stores are Mission Mart, Frenchy’s, Halifax Vintage Co-op, and The Vintage Mansion – you never know what hidden gems you’ll find! Shopping local is another great way to be sustainable while supporting small businesses. Plus, you’ll end up with cute, one-of-a-kind pieces that no one else has! Some of my favorite local spots include Duly Noted, Ikebana Shop, and The Black Market.
At the end of the day, making sustainable choices doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. Whether it’s repurposing household items, investing in reusable products, or shopping secondhand, small changes can make a big difference for both the planet and your wallet!
