Dutch Village Road Redevelopment, Flamingo Drive, Paving Projects
DUTCH VILLAGE ROAD REDEVELOPMENT BEGINS
The long-promised and much-needed Dutch Village Road redevelopment project began on April 22. In the first stage, crews removed two slip lanes at Westerwald and Joseph Howe. They will realign the streets and install new stormwater pipes, catch basins, and curbs. A sidewalk will be built on the west side of Dutch Village, along with parallel parking spots, improved bus stops, better lighting, and bike lanes. The project is expected to take about eight months, with landscaping to be completed in 2026. Regular updates are available on HRM’s website.
TRAFFIC SAFETY UPGRADES PROPOSED FOR FLAMINGO/MEADOWLARK INTERSECTION
Rockingham residents have long requested safety improvements at the Flamingo/ Meadowlark three-way stop. Drivers often roll through the intersection or fail to stop entirely. Parents are particularly concerned because the intersection is next to DJ Butler Park and playground. HRM traffic safety staff are proposing a three-part solution: removing the two stop signs on Flamingo Drive; installing a pedestrian-activated RRFB (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon) at the Flamingo crosswalk; and installing “speed cushions,” a new traffic calming measure recently approved in HRM. These specially designed speed humps slow cars but not fire trucks. The speed cushions would be placed near the playground. All three measures are planned to be implemented at the same time, possibly next year.
DISTRICT 10 ROAD PAVING PROJECTS FOR 2025
District 10 will undergo several paving projects this year. Willett Street (between Lacewood Drive and Dunbrack Street) will receive an asphalt overlay to repair numerous shallow potholes. Residents will be notified in advance about the timing of work and any impacts on parking or driveway access. As there are several bus routes along this stretch, paving will be coordinated with Halifax Transit to minimize disruptions. Dunbrack Street (from Kearney Lake Road to Wentworth Drive) will receive a surface sealing treatment as part of preventative road maintenance, helping to extend the life of the asphalt. The Bedford Highway between Flamingo Drive and Kearney Lake Road will also be resurfaced. Paving work that began last fall on the Bedford Highway, between Flamingo and Main Avenue, will be completed this year.
