from The Rotary Club of Halifax North West
Welcome to the monthly newsletter from the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest, where we share the club’s news with the community we serve. This issue is about how Rotary is organized globally, and how our club fits in the greater Rotary world.
Rotary International is made up of 1.4 million members globally, in over 45,000 clubs. Each club is part of a district. Our district is District 7815, which covers a large geographical area comprised of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador along with the French islands of Saint Pierre & Miquelon.
Despite Rotary’s global reach, each club is heavily involved in meeting the needs of their local community while extending its reach well outside of its geographical area. Individual club members live in the community they serve and are therefore in a better position to tailor their good deeds to the benefit of their neighbours. That said, individual clubs can also have a global impact through financial and procedural assistance from Districts and partner clubs in the far reaches of the world.
Rotarians stay in touch by getting together at district or international conferences to learn from each other and to celebrate their mutual passion for simply doing good in their local comminity, their district, or the world. It would be a stretch to compare these gatherings to Tupperware parties, but there is palpable excitement in meeting like-minded people and hearing about the projects that are changing the world, one individual or one project at time.
At our own district conference in Halifax recently we heard a gripping story of a Rotarian who was born with polio in India. His mother gave him up for adoption so he would have a chance to escape what would had been an otherwise challenging life – or death. He was adopted by a family in Yukon, and over the years went from only being able to crawl to being self-sufficient. He is giving back as an ambassador for polio eradication. Through his and the actions of thousands of Rotarians, including the Bill Gates Foundation, we can count the number of wild polio cases in the world in single digits. We are getting close!
This is only one of the stories among thousands that makes us proud to be Rotarians – and gives us reasons to celebrate!
