Rebuilding Dutch VillageRoad
After many years in the planning, Dutch Village Road is finally getting a facelift. In fact, most of Dutch Village Road is being rebuilt, starting underground in May with upgrades to the stormwater pipes and relocation of gas lines. The west side of Dutch Village Road is in the process of having a sidewalk installed, which is a real necessity on such a busy commercial street. Because the west side of Dutch Village has been missing a sidewalk, some of the bus stops have not been very accessible. Bus stops that are piles of dirt at the moment will be transformed into standard cement landing pads that will be much more accessible for transit users.
Parking on the west side of Dutch Village Road also needs to be fixed. The current nose-in style of parking, with front bumpers up against stores and businesses, is technically illegal. This nose-in parking will be converted to safer parallel parking. In the future, drivers parked on Dutch Village Road will be able to pull away normally instead of having to back up into oncoming traffic. Dutch Village Road will also be getting new street lighting for better visibility, as well as a bike lane, separated from the road by a permanent curb. The Dutch Village bike lane will link to the Chain of Lakes recreational trail on Joseph Howe Drive.
The rebuilding of Dutch Village Road is a $10 million construction project that is expected to take eight months to complete. It is a complex job but if all goes well over the next few weeks, the outbound lane between Central Avenue and Joseph Howe Drive will reopen at the end of July. The plan is to have Dutch Village Road rebuilt, repaved and fully functional by late fall or early winter. Landscaping and other finishing touches will be added in 2026. Once done, Dutch Village Road will be more attractive as a destination and safer for all users.
