As someone who immigrated to Canada at a young age, I understand the value and the opportunities of immigration for our Country.
Newcomers to Canada strengthen our culture and diversity. They also are an essential component of the Canadian labour force. In addition to filling vital skill gaps, they also bring talent, innovation and financial investment into our Country.
Canada’s economic recovery is dependent on being able to grow our economy; and that means filling vacant jobs and creating new employment opportunities. In order to welcome immigrants, and enable them to help grow our economy, we need a better system for recognizing credentials so that newcomers can work in their established fields and help fill the critical labour gaps in areas such as the medical profession here in Canada.
To help get immigrants find work in their professions, Erin O’Toole and Canada’s Conservatives will immediately launch a Credential Recognition Task Force to develop timely and appropriate credential recognition strategies. This plan will strengthen credential recognition for those arriving in Canada to maximize their success by allowing them to work in their field of knowledge and expertise. With our Plan, we will have a system which welcomes the best and the brightest from around the World.
The Task Force will also study credential pre-qualification which will allow people in other countries to acquire Canadian standard proficiency through accredited institutions overseas or via distance learning with a Canadian Institution.
Our Conservative team will implement bold and necessary solutions to the many key challenges which are currently facing our immigration system, including:
• Reducing the administrative backlog. Canada’s Conservatives will create an efficient mechanism whereby a fee can be paid for expedited processing. All revenues from these fees will be directed toward hiring additional people to streamline the processing wait times further, benefiting those unable to afford the expedited processing fee through shortened wait times.
• To improve the current Visitor Visa problems, the capacity of the Immigration and Refugee Board will be increased to allow the hearing of asylum claims quickly. There will be an overall strengthening of the integrity and enforcement of the process. We will also explore mechanisms to pursue a more generous and fairer visa system for visitors by including more enforceable commitments to abide by the terms of their visitor visa.
• To modernize the fairness of the immigration process the technological infrastructure of immigration will be moved online. Introducing this will ensure that applications are sped up and recorded. Cultural awareness training will be provided, allowing for the best match between an immigration officer who understands the culture of the applicant. Applicants will also be permitted to correct simple and honest mistakes on their applications rather than having to resubmit the full application as is now the case.
As a Country we must also provide refuge to heroic human rights defenders and those who are fleeing persecution, in addition to strengthening Canadian families by reuniting them with their loved ones.
Canada’s Conservatives understand the important role immigration plays in a post pandemic recovery and will ensure that newcomers are welcomed and set up for success as we Secure the Future for generations to come.
