Another month has passed by which means another month of excitement here at Halifax West High School! The last time we talked, we had just begun school and were getting back into the flow of things, but now that we have adapted back into the school lifestyle and put our summer lifestyle aside, lots of things have been able to happen. October (also known as spooky month) is personally one of my favourite months at school because of all the fun events Student Government has planned along with most sports teams starting up and so much more!
A school wouldn’t be a school without teachers and this is why, on October 5th, Halifax West celebrated World Teachers’ Day. We have so many amazing teachers in our school and they treat everyday like World Students Day so it felt only right to return the favour. Thanksgiving weekend was shortly after this so we hope that everyone had a wonderful time with friends and family. The annual Terry Fox Walk happened on Oct. 20th this year. This is a tradition run by the Volunteerism Committee in order to raise funds for cancer research. Various classes signed up to go on a walk around the neighbourhood and had the chance to donate in their homeroom class in order to raise the most amount of money! Last month, we had hosted a bingo for the new grade 10s at the school and it was such a hit that we decided to extend the fun to the other grade levels! Grade 11s and 12s got to participate in a schoolwide bingo game to win various treat bags and everyone had a blast! Something that we have barely had the chance to do since COVID began is go on field trips, but in mid-October, our upper executive Student Government team got to go to Citadel High School for the Canadian Student Leadership Conference along with various other schools from Nova Scotia. Being someone who got to go, I can wholeheartedly say that it was a very valuable experience and I made many memories that I am so grateful for. Now, October would not be October if it didn’t have our famous Oktoberfest!
The Spirit Committee planned a week of themes and games for the last week of October for everyone to participate in. Monday started off with anything but a backpack day and people got creative with this one because peoples’ new “backpacks” included; microwaves, laundry bins, speakers, and just about anything else you could think of that stores something. The other days of Oktoberfest week included themes like; flannel day, twin day, socks crocs and birkenstocks day, and of course, costume day on Friday. Weeks like these are a great way for us to show off our school spirit and add a bit of a twist to a normal school week! Speaking of school spirit, the World Involvement and Environment committee hosted a schoolyard cleanup this month to make sure we are respecting our surroundings.
Other than Student Government, Halifax West sports were also busy. Starting off with our Girls volleyball team having won their last 4 games! Also, Boys Football qualified for regionals and are playing in the semifinals soon! Not only these, but Girls Soccer came 2nd at regionals and won their provincial qualifier so will be playing at provincials! The Boys hockey team came back from losing 1-2 to win their first game of the season with a great score of 6-2 and the Girls hockey team have 1 win and 1 loss this season! This just about wraps up October at Halifax West High School so I hope you had a great October and I’ll see you in a month to tell you everything about November!
