Officials from 195 nations and the European Union will meet in Montreal from December 7 to December 19 to review advancements in the preservation of the world’s biodiversity. The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, generally known as the NatureCOP, was supposed to meet every two years but was postponed because of the pandemic.

To ensure that Atlantic Canada is well represented during this crucial meeting, Ecology Action Centre will be sending members from their team.

Biodiversity is declining everywhere in the globe, including in Nova Scotia. The ecosystems that support species like the Mainland Moose, Blanding’s Turtle, and Piping Plover are in danger, and the number of animals has decreased globally by roughly 70% in the past 50 years. Humans are integral parts of the complex web of life on Earth, and the biodiversity of our planet affects the wellbeing of our own species. The consequences of biodiversity loss, if it is not stopped, will be catastrophic for our economy, our natural areas, and the animals and communities who depend on them.

Nations from all across the world can unite to save nature during the NatureCOP. As hosts, Canada has the chance to press for sound, achievable goals in a new global agreement that parties attending will sign to prevent and reverse biodiversity loss over the following ten years.

In order for the EAC to take part of this meeting, they will be hopping on Nature Canada’s NatureBus. One of Canada’s oldest national organizations dedicated to protecting nature is Nature Canada. Over the past 80 years, Nature Canada has worked to safeguard numerous species, over 110 million acres of parks, and wildlife regions across Canada. Currently, Nature Canada is the umbrella organization for more than 1,000 environmental organizations and over 130,000 members and supporters.

In order to gather your expressions of support for a strategy to restore nature, Nature Canada’s NatureBus Tour is making stops across the nation. Your letters will be delivered to the Prime Minister on December 6 at the NatureCOP conference.

Do you have an idea on what to send? More information on this at https://ecologyaction.ca/NatureBus
