From the article of Abby McLeod of The Dalhousie Gazette
Hannah Fougere is a nursing student from Dalhousie University. She is born and raised in Cape Breton and is now living in Halifax. She started a small business during the pandemic and is now successfully run in her apartment.
Celestial City is what she calls her company that sells made-to-order sweatshirts. The designs were inspired from her own travel and experiences, or from recommendations by her online community. After purchasing an embroidery machine and software to digitize her designs, Fougere started the business in January 2021 as a way to make extra money and keep herself busy throughout the many lockdowns.
The store had already sold more than 1,000 sweaters since January. She maintains the pre-order operation to make her work environmentally conscious, as the possibility for waste is minimized.
Her bestseller has been the Atlantic Canada collection that accounts nearly half of all her sales.
One of her customers is Mckenzie Hutchings who lauded the quality of the sweatshirts. “The fact that she’s hand-dyeing and then matching the thread to hand-dyed colour, and then embroidering – I don’t know anybody else that’s currently doing that,” she said.
Fougere is proud of what she has created with Celestial City and sees herself running the business online for the “foreseeable future.”
