Hello everyone and happy new year! First off, I am so grateful to have started writing these columns in 2020 and be able to continue into 2022. Another whole year at Halifax West High School has come and gone and, although every year has been one to remember, 2021 was definitely one to keep an extra eye on. To state the obvious, the past couple years have not been the typical “traditional” high school experience but even though we were instructed to put extra space between ourselves (6 feet to be exact!), this did not stop us from growing closer. We tried our best to fulfill everyone’s high school expectations and although it wasn’t exactly like the movies, it still left an impression to last a lifetime.
Before we can move on to 2022, here’s a quick recap of our last month of 2021! Students and staff entered the school on the very first day of December to see that it had been decorated for the holiday season just the night before by our “elves”! Also on the first day, we emphasized the work our custodians put into our school everyday. Our Appreciation and Inclusion committee decorated the custodial lounge as a little surprise and all the janitorial staff were offered hot and tasty dinners from Swiss Chalet on top of dessert and gift baskets. The appreciation committee continued their hard work through the next few days and, on December. 8th, gave out hot chocolate to any staff and students who wanted some. Halifax West’s annual holiday fest started during Mid-December! It had to be cut short due to school closing early for the winter break but we still got the chance to do most of the activities we planned. The first day of holiday fest gave people in our school the chance to wear any holiday accessories they wanted! From elf ears to Santa hats, the school was filled with tons of holiday spirit! The next day’s theme was summer flashback so everyone was welcome to wear any summer clothes they have to warm up the cold weather outside. The next day was also the last day before we left for the winter break so, of course, it was pyjama day! Not only were pyjamas worn, but we had a couple special guests handing out candy canes with notes written on each one at the front door. All of these days were accompanied by instagram challenges to give students a chance to win daily prizes! We missed 2 theme days due to the early closure but the themes were just as exciting and included; winter wonderland colours and ugly Christmas sweaters.
Our community involvement committee held a Turkey Club fundraiser during December to raise money for families who need it during the holiday season. In addition to this, our West Wear committee was able to put out their first order for the school year so people could receive it before Christmas! Both these events were a big hit and helped brighten the school for the month of December. As always, our school sports stayed busy and the Girls Hockey Team is sitting at 4th in their division with an impressive 8-5 record! Also, the Boys Hockey Team is in 2nd in their division with an amazing 9-4 record. Both the boys and girls basketball teams were able to start playing games this month but were unfortunately cut short due to added health restrictions.
That’s about everything that has happened in December so make sure to follow along with Halifax West’s journey in the coming months by looking for this column!
