Join me in celebrating Asian Heritage Month, an opportunity for us to learn more about the contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage who helped make the Canada we love. This is a reminder to come together and combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination.

Also, on May 5th, please wear red to honour the voices of Indigenous women and girls during the annual National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

APRIL RECAP
I would like to thank District 12 Volunteer Award winners Helen Burchell, Jessica Quillan, and Taqiuddin Hashmi, as well as the hosts and attendees of the April 19th event, for all you do for our community.

I am also pleased to announce that on April 25th, Regional Council approved the 2023/24 municipal budget of $1.2 billion which allows HRM to complete HalifACT projects, park land development, community action planning for African Nova Scotian communities and more! During the meeting, we heard your concerns and are happy to have reversed paid Saturday parking. Learn more: https://www.halifax.ca/city-hall/ budget-finances/budget/.

DISTRICT UPDATE
You may see me this month with HRM Parks staff as we evaluate the condition of several District 12 parks!

Also, I will be attending a public guided bird walk hosted by the Bird Friendly Halifax Coalition from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. on May 18th at Belchers Marsh. We will meet on the corner of Langbrea & Parkland. To register and see other walks check out their website: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/halifaxbird-week-tickets-619815463737

Halifax Water will conduct their annual water distribution flush over a 5-day cycle starting April 30th. If you experience discoloured water, run the cold water at one faucet until it runs clear. Learn more: https://halifaxwater.ca/notice/2023- water-distribution-system-flushing.

A special thanks to the Bhayana Family Foundation for hosting the May 12th Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition event in celebration of the 20,000 Nova Scotians workers in the charitable and non-profit sector! The event is from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Cedar Event Centre. Register here: https://bhayanafoundation.org/novascotia-day-of-recognition-2023/

WARNING OF SCAM TARGETING SENIORS
Halifax Regional Police have reported scams intended to defraud seniors of money. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member who was arrested and needs money, do not provide or confirm any personal or financial information and hang up the phone.

Please help Halifax Regional Police by reporting scams, speeding, illegal parking, and other issues to their non emergency line, 902.490.5020.
