The Competition Act is an Act to provide for the general regulation of trade and commerce in respect of conspiracies, trade practices and mergers affecting competition. Its main purpose is to maintain and encourage competition in Canada in order to promote the efficiency and adaptability of the Canadian economy, in order to expand opportunities for Canadian participation in world markets while at the same time recognizing the role of foreign competition in Canada, in order to ensure that small and medium-sized enterprises have an equitable opportunity to participate in the Canadian economy and in order to provide consumers with competitive prices and product choices.

With more and more are venturing in the business industry; the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Competition Bureau of Canada, hosted a business support series: Is your Business Competition Act Compliant?

Competition drives lower prices and innovation while fueling economic growth. However, in the pursuit of competition, even the smallest difference in language, or representation can lead to businesses being offside the law, even if by mistake. The Competition Bureau is here to protect Canadian businesses and provide you with resources that will ensure compliance and an even playing field for all businesses.

One of the presenters is Yanick Poulin, who has been a competition law officer since 2001 after obtaining his law degree from the University of Ottawa. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 2005 and has solid experience with investigations.

Yanick also had the opportunity to participate on joint investigations with other organizations from Canada and the United-States like the RCMP, CBSA, the SQ, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and DOJ.

Another presenter is Sophie Beaulieu who joined the Competition Bureau in 2008 after obtaining a master’s degree in economics from Université de Montréal. Her first career was with the Competition Bureau’s Mergers Branch as a Competition Law Officer.

Register before March 8, 2022 and learn if your marketing, pricing or trade practices be anti-competitive.
