Racism is still one of the major problems in our society. Cooper Diallo, who in her young age has released a book based from her experiences during her high school. Diallo’s book #BlackInSchool is helping readers educate themselves on the Black experience during Black History Month. The book was released in September 2021 and details her experience as a Black student in the public school system, who fights back against systemic racism in Canadian schools.
Cooper Diallo developed her novel from a chronological series of journal entries she wrote throughout grades 11 and 12. With this, she hopes to spark change in the system where she shared how she was vulnerable. She shared personal experiences of racism and even repeatedly harassed by a teacher about her elevator pass.
She said that her ultimate goal is for her book to be read by students across Canada to create a better, more inclusive, anti-racist world. With the release of her book, more and more teachers are reaching out to Diallo in support to end racism in public schools.
Her desire to create change inspired her to pursue developing this novel and even had to step out of her comfort zone when publishing.
“As much as I would love to, it’s just simply not a privilege when there are so many atrocities being committed around us, simply due to the colour of our skin,” she says. “So, where do I get the inspiration? I just have to have it.”
