Enjoying Summer Safely!

Enjoying Summer Safely!

Summer is one of the most awaited seasons, especially our kids! But we can’t enjoy it if we are not protected from its negative effects. One of the most common type of cancer diagnosed in Canada is skin cancer which comprises about one-third of all new cancer cases in the country. While we are now approaching warm weather, here are some tips from Doctors Nova Scotia on how to protect ourselves from the negative effects of too much exposure from the sun.

Protect your skin
When you go out to the beach or any activity that requires sun exposure, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply it every two hours. Protect your lips with lip protectant and wear loose fitting or breathable clothing to also avoid heat stroke. A cool sunglass won’t also hurt.

Apply sunscreen generously
Stop skimping when applying sunscreen. It’s better to buy more sunscreen than spending more from skin burns or diseases. Apply also on unprotected skin areas and vulnerable spots like ears, behind the knees, and tops of the feet.

Find shade
Bring your hats or umbrellas to enjoy the warmth and good weather without getting too much sun exposure.

Avoid peak hours
Avoid making activities or be exposed in the sun when the sun is at its hottest which is between 10 am and 2 pm. Taking the right precautions will help you have a pain-free (and burn-free) summer!
