With or without the pandemic, one of the activities that was not stopped is biking. The number of people biking even increased during the easing of protocols. Other than a temporary answer for boredom, biking helps lower dangerous diseases such as diabetes, chronic disease, other cardiovascular complications. With more and more people who continues biking as a new hobby, more bike lanes and routes are being opened in the province.

For those who want to go back to biking, here are some tips from Doctors Nova Scotia to help you:

Stay safe
If you have a bike that has been in the garage for a while, it does not hurt to have your bike a checkup. It’s better to pay for some tune-ups and some repairs than to cost you a fortune when you met an accident. Before you had out, you should also wear proper gear or attires specially a helmet.

Start slow
For starters and starting again, don’t try to take a long trail instantly. Choose your paths. A quiet street or with safe bike lanes is good for beginners.

Make it a routine
When you already get accustom to biking, you can start using your bike as an alternate way of transportation. You can use your bike when you have errands, visiting friends, or having a bike ride with your friends. When you make it a routine, try to make your biking time longer. Aside from its health benefits, you won’t be worrying much of parking.

Build community
With your experience and skills, you can now hone them with workshops and other courses. You can also invite your friends and join with clubs that are active in the community.

You can contact the Halifax Cycling Coalition. They offer an urban cycling course for adults and organizes critical mass rides. There is also The Ecology Action Centre that offers bike-safety courses for people of all ages, including Welcoming Wheels, a bike-buddy program that matches newcomers with experienced local riders.
