The Halifax Camerata Singers is Atlantic Canada’s premier chamber choir. It was founded in 1986 by Artistic Director Jeff Joudrey had a vision of a chamber choir for his native Nova Scotia. The award-winning ensemble has distinguished itself by performing exciting choral repertoire that covers all periods and styles, with special attention to Canadian music. The auditioned choir is known for its high performance standards, claiming national recognition and the Healy Willan Grand Prize in the 2010 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. They’ve collaborated with chamber musicians, opera singers and writers, becoming Halifax’s undisputed representative on the Canadian choral scene.
Joudrey recently announced that next season will be his final one leading Camerata and the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus. Known for his high artistic standards and presentation of demanding choral repertoire, the conductor and organist has led Camerata in more than 40 world premieres of new works, 25 of which were commissioned by the choir. They’ve been nominated for and won many awards, have sung at Canada’s Podium conference and were one of three choirs selected worldwide for the inaugural Edmonton International Choral Festival in 2017.
According to Board Chair Diane Zwicker, Jeff’s dedication to the art of choral singing has been unsurpassed in Nova Scotia. He’s recognized around Canada for the fine choir he created, his innovative programming and commitment to excellence. He also added that they will miss him as their leader but is certain that his legacy will see them forward under new leadership.
Representing the choir, Alto and Board member Kelly Hart said, “ On behalf of the singers, we send Jeff all our love and best wishes. We’re all impatient to be back singing with him and presenting the great programs he’s created for us. His commitment to high artistic levels and music-making inspires us all and has kept us going during the pandemic.”
Joudrey has also led Camerata as the core of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus and trained the SNS Chorus for many years, with stellar performances of great orchestral choral masterworks including Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
