Boosting Nova Scotia’s Economy!

Halifax and Nova Scotia are seeing unprecedented increases in their population, GDP, number of new firms, and university talent. How can we start to change our aims and define the future of Nova Scotia when the province has a population goal of two million people in the upcoming years?

The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first Economic Forum “Economic Engine: Driving Nova Scotia’s Economy Forward”.

This forum will present a positive, realistic, and upbeat narrative of the direction Nova Scotia’s economy is taking after the recovery and how to successfully avoid traps and seize opportunities. Come and join on May 9 to talk about how businesses and governments should act and respond to manage the economy so that it serves the interests of all Nova Scotians.

Public vs Private Healthcare Solutions Debate
The current healthcare infrastructures are collapsing under the heavy demand on their resources, leading to the recent declaration of a crisis in the provincial public healthcare system. If healthcare privatization could help with this dilemma, several detractors have questioned it. The long-running discussion about the privatization of the healthcare system has recently been rekindled by this shift toward privatization. The debaters will thoroughly examine the advantages and disadvantages of both viewpoints in this Munk-style debate. At the conclusion, the audience will select the winner. This debate will be moderated by Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray, the President and Vice-Chancellor of Saint Mary’s University.

Indigenous Business Panel
The nation’s Indigenous business community is expanding quickly, including in Mi’kmaki. Learn about the future of Indigenous business from the leaders in the community’s indigenous businesses.

Momentum in Atlantic Canada with Edward Greenspon
Learn more about “The Atlantic Canada Momentum Index” from the Public Policy Forum from Edward Greenspon. During the pandemic, when its strong leadership and social cohesion acted as a wake-up call to other Canadians, the Public Policy Forum’s optimism about Atlantic Canada was strengthened. The Public Policy Forum convincingly demonstrates in its Atlantic Canada Momentum Index that conditions, from the weather to the economy, have made Atlantic Canadians resilient and entrepreneurial, allowing us to become the shapers of our own destiny. These conditions include high vaccination and low infection rates, along with a historic turnaround in population growth and significant inroads in the innovation economy. Both present and past regional leaders can see that a new era is beginning. The Public Policy Forum (PPF), a national applied policy think tank created in the 1980s, is led by Edward Greenspon as President and Chief Executive Officer.

The Business of Politics Panel
A panel discussion on the business and factors that influence political decision-making will be hosted by Enterprise Canada. This debate will provide insight into the pressing issues of the day and explain why our political leaders take the views they do thanks to a group of political insiders with decades of experience working on campaigns and in governments in Ottawa, Nova Scotia, and other provinces across Canada. This will be moderated by Dennis Matthews, President of Creative Currency with panelists: Jason Lietaer, President, Enterprise Canada; Laura D’Angelo, Vice President, National Strategy & Public Affairs, Enterprise Canada; and David Sommer, Vice President, National Strategic Communications, Enterprise Canada.
