Youth Runs by Doctors Nova Scotia celebrate its 20th year!

Getting kids and young people active and having fun has long been a priority for Doctors Nova Scotia (DNS). Including movement in a child’s daily routine can aid in the development of positive habits that the child will maintain as an adult.

After all, happy children lead to happy families and happier neighborhoods.

With this, DNS began sponsoring the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run at the Halifax Blue Nose Marathon in 2004 (which will be held on Saturday, May 20 this year). After launching Kids Run Club across the province in 2005, DNS started supporting a kid’s race in Sydney put on by the Cape Breton Fiddlers Marathon. This year’s event is scheduled on Sunday, June 4.

Doctors Nova Scotia is pleased to mark 20 years of supporting these significant occasions through sponsorship. (Interesting fact: The association is the sole original sponsor that continues to support the Blue Nose Marathon.)

These events can encourage other family members to consider running in addition to being thrilling for young runners and giving them a pleasant goal to work toward.

The majority of the youth runners have been training for their major competitions through Kids Run Club, which is now being made available to schools all around the province by DNS Healthy Tomorrow Foundation.

Each year, more than 16,000 youngsters participate in this free program where they gain knowledge about goal-setting and making good decisions in addition to jogging.

25 Dalhousie medical students are volunteering as coaches with KRC this year. The medical students enjoy interacting with children and educating them about how teamwork and physical activity can be fun. Even medical students outside of Nova Scotia are being inspired to participate. A KRC has been constructed at Hazen White-St. thanks to Madeline Power, a Dal Medical student in New Brunswick. Francis School in Saint John, and 14 medical students will assist them.

Many of the medical student coaches will be returning to Nova Scotia with their teams to participate in the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run at Blue Nose as “running buddies,” encouraging and supporting the children as they run.

Additionally, DNS doctors will be present at both Youth Runs to support the young runners and award medals as they cross the finish line. We look forward to seeing you at the races!
